What are Campfire Candles?

Big flames dancing on a peaceful pond of wax…… Our unique, patent pending candles are designed to provide you with the natural warmth and comforting light ambiance of wood fire , without the hassles. Our candles are made of all natural soy wax  in  rustic steel containers and the patent pending wicks are made of paper, cotton and wood. Simply light the big candle then kick back and enjoy watching the dancing flames  reflect off the pond of molten wax. When you’re ready for bed, simply “put a lid on it”, and it’s ready for the next night. You can try blowing it out, but good luck, they're very wind proof. Our magical candles burn for about 15 hours depending on the outside temperature, the duration of each lighting, and the frequency and height of wick trimming. The unique designs add even more enchantment. You’ll feel love while gazing at the blazing heart-shaped pulsing flame. With the happy face candle you’ll find yourself grinning at the dancing eyebrows and flowing smile. And the Ying Yang candle will bring you peaceful thoughts of balance. Our candles don’t emit any sparks, so they’re much safer than wood campfires during dry seasons. The lids, containers, and wax surface are decorative art, and are currently on display in several galleries. In fact, some of our customers display the candles as art in their homes, saying, “Oh, I can’t put it outdoors and light it; it’s too beautiful”. Please visit our online store page for a complete line of candles for you backyard, patio, porch, fireplace, beach, or camping enjoyment. Also, please read the safety precautions page and follow the directions provided with your candle.

History of Campfire Candles

While sitting around a campfire with friends in a Sequoia National Park on a warm summer night in 2004, Chip Collard, a science teacher, watched a young man try repeatedly to start a wood fire in the campsite upwind from his. The young man’s girlfriend sat on a log next to the firepit looking on, chin in hand, as  thck smoke puffed out of the wet wood, but no flame. Chip thought to himself, 'wouldn't it be nice if they had a big, easy to light candle instead of wet wood'. Later, Chip walked around the smoky campground wondering, ‘why do we need all these smoky fires?”. It's not a cold night, the fires aren't for heat, and the bugs aren't a problem either. Some of these campers simply wanted dancing fire light to watch, like cowboy TV. The idea for the Campfire Candle was born. For the next year Chip experimented with different wicks, waxes and containers until he finally developed a wick sheet and wick sheet support system that worked. But there were many failed attempts. At first he tried multiple single point wicks, but they looked like birthday cakes, other wicks collapsed and sank into the wax, some were difficult to light, or blew out in the slightest wind. Most of the waxes he tested resulted in flare ups, where the entire wax surface dangerously ignited, but then he found a relatively new type of soy wax that burned safely. After he discovered the best combination of materials that were safe, withstood wind, emitted little smoke, and a support system that maintained upright wick sheet configurations he filed a patent application with the USPTO in September 2005. And today, here at Campfire Candles we continue to develop improvements in quality and new designs, integrating colors and fragrances at the new candle creation facility in Red Lodge, Montana.
